How to publish an app on the Play Store in 2026

The Play Store publishing process has evolved. Here is the updated 2026 guide with the new mandatory closed testing requirements.

Create a Google Play Developer account

Prerequisite

Go to play.google.com/console. One-time fee: $25 USD. Complete your developer profile (individual or organization). Identity verification required since 2024.

Prepare your AAB (Android App Bundle)

Technical

Generate your .aab from Android Studio (Build → Generate Signed Bundle). Sign with a production key, not debug. targetSdkVersion must be ≥ 34.

Create the Play Store listing

Marketing

Title (max 30 chars), short description (80 chars), long description (4000 chars), 512×512 px icon, 2+ screenshots per screen format, feature graphic 1024×500 px.

Set up and launch closed testing

⚠️ Required

Mandatory since 2023 for new accounts. Create a testers group, upload your AAB, generate the opt-in link. You need 12 testers for 14 days. → TestMonApp helps here.

Content rating (IARC), privacy policy, sensitive permission declarations, collected data information (Data Safety).

Submit to production

Publication

Once the 14 days are validated, go to "Production" → "Create a release". Google reviews your app in 24–72h. Upon approval, your app goes live.
