Google Play Closed Test: complete setup guide
Closed testing is the mandatory step before publishing your app to production on Google Play Store. Here is everything you need to know.
What is a Google Play closed test?
A closed test (Closed Testing) is a controlled testing phase where you invite a restricted group of users to test your app before its public launch. Google made it mandatory for new developer accounts since late 2023.
Step-by-step setup in Play Console
Access Closed Testing
In Google Play Console → your app → "Testing" → "Closed testing". Click "Manage" then "Create a testers group".
Upload your AAB/APK
Submit your test version (can be different from prod). Make sure your versionCode is higher than the previous version.
Generate the opt-in link
Play Console generates an invitation link. Testers must click this link AND install the app to count as active.
Invite your testers via TestMonApp
Publish your campaign on TestMonApp, paste your opt-in link in the description. Motivated testers will sign up and join your program.
Monitor the 14 days
In Play Console → "Closed testing" → "Statistics": verify the active tester counter reaches and maintains 12 minimum over 14 consecutive days.
Common mistakes to avoid
Inactive testers
A tester who doesn't launch the app doesn't count. Remind them or replace them.
Expired link
The opt-in link can expire. Check that it is still valid before sharing it.
Unpublished version
Your AAB must be in "Approved" status in Play Console for testers to install it.
Fewer than 12 testers
Google counts continuously: if you drop below 12, the 14-day counter restarts.
